A new study on the eyes of small animals shows that they can
process visual information faster than humans can. So from their visual
perspective they can see larger animals moving in slow motion. This adaptation
help the small animal evade its attacker or attackers. Animals with this
ability are golden mantled ground squirrels and pigeons. Some humans can somewhat
see in this way as well. Athletes can process visual information faster than non-athletes.
The same is true for young people who can get the information faster than the
old.
You might be
wondering how the measured this. Well the scientist used a technique called
critical flicker fusion frequency to measure the speed at which the eye processes
light. Taking the results and putting them on a graph showed that it also had
to do with the body size as well.
